NSW Government helps Babyology grow up
Media release | 13 June 2017
Popular parenting website Babyology, led by Sydney based female entrepreneur Mandi Gunsberger, is embarking on an aggressive growth strategy hiring 15 extra staff and growing its viewership significantly thanks to support from the NSW Government.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, Small Business and Skills, John Barilaro, said the company, which has received a $300,000 Accelerating Growth Loan from the private-sector led, NSW Government backed Jobs for NSW, now reaches two million Australians every month and 40 per cent of Mums in the country.
“Founder Mandi Gunsberger has a high standing in Australia’s entrepreneurial network and was recently named one of Australia’s top 50 female entrepreneurs under 40.
“Mandi started Babyology as a blog from her dinner table after identifying a market need and has grown the company to 18 staff generating millions of dollar in revenue. Babyology is a successful business which the NSW Government is now helping take to the next level to support further job creation for our state."
Supporting the company’s growth is an increasing spend in digital and online advertising. The Australian online advertising market reached $6.8 million in 2016, an increase of 29.5% since 2015.
Ms Gunsberger said that in early 2016 she was working from her dinner table with 18 staff spread around Australia.
“The Accelerating Growth Loan has allowed us to hire the extra staff we need to grow and we have moved into an open plan office in Surry Hills. Now we can build the business rather than getting stuck in a bottle neck."
Despite the challenges of growing a business, Ms Gunsberger has still found time to mentor women starting their own companies.
“I am working with Heads Over Heels, Shesays, Mentor Walks and SheStart. I’ve been helped along the way so it’s definitely my turn to give back.”
Ms Gunsberger said the timing of the loan guarantee was fantastic.
“It’s not easy to raise money. It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve done. It’s really helpful that the government has come along to help us get to the next level. Long term we are looking at going international. Working with a big media player would be an end game for us."
